Hardware & Hanging Safety

Care Guide

A properly hung swing should feel smooth, balanced, and secure. These simple checks help ensure safe, comfortable use — especially as seasons and weather change.

IMPORTANT: We always recommend hiring a licensed professional to hang your porch swing or swing bed. Check out our installers guide

Initial Check (First Week After Installation)

  • Confirm all bolts, eye screws, and connection points are fully seated and snug.
  • Check that chains or ropes hang straight and are evenly spaced.
  • Sit gently at first and listen for unusual movement or noise.
  • Re-check fasteners after the first few uses — light settling is normal.

Routine Safety Checks (Seasonal)

  • Inspect all hardware for rust, corrosion, or wear.
  • Confirm chains, ropes, and springs are free of fraying or kinks.
  • Make sure ceiling hooks or beams show no signs of cracking or movement.
  • Verify the swing hangs level and doesn’t drift to one side.

Hanging Height & Clearance

  • Maintain adequate clearance behind and in front of the swing for a full, gentle arc. Check our Hanging Guide for more information.
  • Ensure the swing seat height allows feet to touch the floor lightly when seated.
  • Avoid hanging too high — excessive drop increases stress on hardware.

Chains, Rope & Connection Points

  • If you have not purchased chains from us, make sure you purchase chains that are rated for outdoor use and appropriate weight capacity.
  • Rope installations should use marine-grade or outdoor-rated rope only.
  • All connectors (S-hooks, carabiners, quick links) should be fully closed and rated for load.
  • Replace any component that shows significant wear — don’t try to “push through” damage.
Important: Hardware is a wear item. Replacing a chain or connector early is always safer than waiting until it fails.

Climate & Environment Considerations

Coastal / Salt Air

  • Inspect hardware more frequently.
  • Rinse metal components occasionally to remove salt residue.
  • Replace hardware at the first sign of corrosion.

Four-Season / Freeze-Thaw

  • Check hardware before and after winter.
  • Look for loosening caused by expansion and contraction.
  • Re-tighten as needed in spring.

Weight Capacity & Safe Use

  • Never exceed the recommended weight capacity for your swing and hardware.
  • Distribute weight evenly — avoid sudden drops or jumping onto the swing.
  • Children should be supervised at all times.
  • Avoid twisting chains or ropes, which can stress connection points.
