Troubleshooting Porch Swings and Swing Beds
If something feels “off,” it’s usually a quick fix. Use this guide to solve the most common swing and cushion issues — and when in doubt, send us a photo. We’re happy to help.
Start Here (fast checks)
- Check level: Are both sides hanging the same length?
- Check connections: Are quick links, S-hooks, or carabiners fully closed?
- Check hardware snugness: Bolts and eye screws should be secure (not wobbling).
- Check cushions: Are they fully dry and seated evenly?
Swing Troubleshooting
Squeaking or creaking
Most often caused by metal-on-metal contact or slight misalignment.
- Confirm chains/ropes hang straight and aren’t twisted.
- Check that connectors aren’t rubbing against the frame.
- Re-seat and tighten hardware after the first week of use.
- If you use springs, confirm they’re oriented correctly and not binding.
Helpful next step: review Hardware & Hanging Safety.
Swing feels uneven / pulls to one side
Usually chain/rope length, attachment point spacing, or a slight shift after use.
- Measure chain lengths from ceiling hook to swing attachment on both sides.
- Confirm left/right ceiling hooks are aligned and evenly spaced.
- Re-level by adjusting one side link at a time.
- Re-check after a day — some settling is normal.
Helpful next step: review Hanging Height & Clearance (in Hardware guide).
Swing “drifts” or rotates
Often from twisted chains/ropes or uneven ceiling anchor points.
- Untwist chains/ropes and ensure they hang freely.
- Confirm attachment points are centered and symmetrical.
- Check that connectors aren’t catching or binding.
If rotation persists, contact us with photos of your hang points.
Hardware shows rust or corrosion
Most common in coastal or high-humidity environments.
- Pause use if corrosion looks severe.
- Rinse hardware occasionally if you’re near salt air.
- Replace affected components early — hardware is a wear item.
- Inspect more frequently during wet seasons.

Cushion & Fabric Troubleshooting
Cushions smell musty
Almost always trapped moisture (rain + storage, or not fully drying after cleaning).
- Remove cushions and let them air dry completely (sun + airflow helps).
- Stand cushions on edge so air reaches all sides.
- Don’t store in a bag/cover until fully dry.

Mildew spots on fabric
Mildew grows on residue (dirt, pollen) when moisture lingers.
- Follow Sunbrella’s cleaning instructions for best results.
- Clean, rinse thoroughly, and allow full drying.
- Increase routine rinsing during humid seasons.

Stains (food, sunscreen, sap, etc.)
Most stains lift best when treated early.
- Blot first (don’t rub aggressively).
- Use mild soap + water, then rinse thoroughly.
- For stubborn stains, follow Sunbrella’s stain-specific steps.

Cushions slide or won’t stay put
Usually a sizing/placement issue or fabric “break-in.”
- Confirm cushions are centered and seated evenly.
- Rotate cushions occasionally to distribute compression.
- If outdoors in wind, bring cushions in when not in use.
